Horseback

Illume awoke just as the sun crested over the horizon. He’d always been a morning person. Since his bedtime was 6:30 pm as a child, his body had been used to waking up before the sun. After running his fingers through his hair, Illume grabbed his coin purse as he heard movement outside.

Poking his head out, Illume saw a group of guards pass by as well as several merchants. The city was beginning to stir. Illume left the confines of Urtan’s house and made his way to the stables, which were not yet open.

Illume took a seat on a bench outside, watching people as they walked from here to there. Their faces were darker than they had been previously, with not as many smiles or greetings to one another.

“Can I help you?” a voice called.

Illume looked toward the voice’s source to see a man in light cloth garb approaching the stables. His long dark hair was pinned back above unpointed ears. Clearly this man was completely human. Illume stood, grabbing his coin purse and nodding.

“Yes, sir. Are you the owner of the stables?” Illume asked.

“I am. Do you need horses?” he replied.

“I do. Friends and I are going on…” Illume explained.

“I don’t need to know your story. I have two horses I can sell at six hundred polis apiece. The third is for my work, it’s not for sale,” the man interrupted.

Illume opened his coin purse. He loved video game mechanics, as his coin purse could fit in the palm of his hand no problem, but as he opened it, there were thousands of polis pieces within, as if it were bigger on the inside. The Doctor would be proud. Illume reaches in, removing the subsequent 1200 polis and handing it over.

The horses cost him nearly half of his coin, but they would be well worth the investment. The stable master took his polis and opened the stables. Inside were three painted horses. They were not quite as large as Clydesdales, but they were close.

“Have your pick,” the stable master said while moving to the back of the structure.

Illume approached the first horse, holding his hand out. The horse nuzzled it. Illume saddled the beast and put reins on him then moved to the second horse. It reared up and tried to kick Illume, so he moved on.

The last horse was quiet, reserved, but after making eye contact with her, Illume could see that she was thinking things through, that she was a smart one. Illume saddled her as well before leading them both back to Urtan’s house.

Upon arriving, he found that Nari and Trill had already woken up and packed, ready for the road ahead. Trill worked on breakfast as Nari drank her “black mana.” Illume held the reins.

“I got us a ride. Trill, meet your steed Neighthan Fillyan! Nari, this was yours. Meet Horson Wells,” Illume proclaimed.

Nari let out a laughing scoff at the names. Horse puns were a gaming trope of Illume. Being able to make them here and have someone enjoy them brought warmth to his heart.
